Xp Mode
  1. #21
By the way, in case you guys didn't already know, XP virtualization mode does not come included with the RTM, it needs to be downloaded seperately.

XP Mode is also only available on Professional and Ultimate Edition (possibly Enterprise also) but it's not available on Windows home Premium, which I find deplorable, considering it's the OS most home users will use.

Then again, I suppose most people won't really have a use for XP mode, except to play around with.

I agree, but the entire purpose of XPM was to get users to cut the XP cord, and many of them may not cut it, since they wont have their "safety blanket" available on Home Premium.

XP Mode is practically useless, so MS should have made it available on Home Premium, to give those die-hard XP believers another reason to make the switch.....IMO!

Xp mode IS useless. Anyone who has any need for, or uses a virtuallization program will already be doing so, no matter what os they are using as a host. Anyone who doesnt, will only come across problems and trouble shooting glooms like whats already popping up. I agree with the marketing ploy, previously stated. On top of that, I also think its Microsoft's way of cutting into VMwares market to curb there software thinapp at the commercial level. I have yet to come across any major software or applications that do not run in Seven, to the point I would need them specifically ran in this socalled "xp mode". Its not even a "mode". When I start photoshop, does my os go into Adobe Photoshop "mode"? Virtualization software is just that, software.

I think XP mode is a bit useless as it is also not available for many people as it uses Virtualization and a lot of laptops/pc's do not have it. Like mine. I think instead of all this integration and that they just offer everyone a free download of Windows XP in a virtual machine. (Without all this integration) Or should have put a code on the windows 7 boxes that lets you get one Windows XP key for free. So you can use is in a dual-boot or a VM.

Yes it is. I tried it today for the first time with the RTM and I thought the version that I used during the Beta was better. I could not even get higher than a 16bit color on my desktop.

Same here, because one cannot install drivers for the actual video cards you have installed in your PC.

It defaults to a S3trio video card setup. No advanced settings are available either.
    SoundCard does the same,defaults to a SB16 configuration,remember them,old Win95/98 stuff...

Still got a couple of them cards laying around in a box in the basement somewhere.
Maybe its time to have a "Classic PC Parts" yard sale...

I did bump my ram up on it though and that helps out some.

Was gonna see if maybe I could get some of my older PC games to work using XPmode, but with video limits I guess not today....

I decided that XP mode is a DUD, I liked the concept but to use it is so limited that when I set up a new partition and Dual boot for 7 and XP, I find it way better and much more versitile and powerful.

    Dual Boot partitioned XP
    Full SP3
    Full updated drivers
Separate Partion less chance of cross infection

    Virtual
    Limited Drivers
Runs inside 7 so limits resources
Virus and Malware on 7 will be directly affecting Virtual XP for sure

This is my thoughts at least.
